What Is the Austrian Motorway Vignette?

The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory toll sticker — or its digital equivalent — required for all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes that use Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft). The obligation applies regardless of the vehicle's country of registration.

Introduced as a flat-rate annual toll system, the vignette replaced per-kilometre tolling on the general motorway network. Certain routes — primarily alpine tunnels and mountain passes — still carry separate route-specific tolls in addition to the vignette requirement. Motorists who use Austrian motorways without a valid vignette face on-the-spot fines that significantly exceed the cost of the vignette itself.

Since 2022, the digital e-vignette has become the primary form sold through official channels. The physical adhesive sticker remains available but must be affixed correctly to the windscreen to be valid. Both formats carry identical legal standing and are enforced through a combination of roadside checks and automated licence-plate recognition cameras.

"The vignette obligation applies to all motorways and expressways designated with a green sign bearing the motorway symbol in Austria. Using these roads without a valid vignette constitutes an administrative offence."
